Some of our elderly clients and those with dementia can’t always tell our home carers exactly what they want. But our excellent team will always find a way of communicating with them.
That’s the case for one of our home care clients who has problems remembering words; she knows what she wants to say, but can’t always find the right words to communicate it. Sheila, one of our Tonbridge home care team, has found out that if she suggests things, she can work out what the client is trying to say through a process of elimination: “I have worked with her for so long that I know how her mind works now. With the right prompting and questioning from me, we can normally figure out what she is trying to say fairly quickly.”
Sometimes the client wants to go to a particular shop, but she can’t remember the name of the shop or how to describe where it is. “So we set off on a magical mystery tour,” explains Sheila. “When we get to each junction I’ll ask her if we are going this way or the other, and she’ll direct me – she can’t name the shop or where it is, but she can navigate the route. We’ll turn the final corner and I’ll say: ‘So it’s the garden centre?’ Sometimes she might want to go to a particular shop, or she might want to go to a particular town, such as Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells or Sevenoaks. I never know when we set off where we are going to end up!”
Finding ways to communicate with our home care clients who struggle to find the right words is just one of the little things our carers do that make a big difference to our elderly clients and those with dementia in the Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks areas.
