Sometimes our clients don’t want to do the things their relatives have asked us to help them with. But our excellent home carers will always find an inventive way to make sure we fulfil their care plan and ensure they are looked after properly.
Francis Bacon told us that “If the mountain won’t come to Muhammad then Muhammad must go to the mountain.” It can sometimes be like that with our elderly clients and those with dementia: we agree with them and/or their carers that we should help them with certain activities, but – when push comes to shove (and it never quite gets that far!) – they don’t want to do it.
This was the problem one of our excellent home care team faced recently; she was supposed to help one of our clients have a regular bath, but the lady decided she simply would not get in the bath any more.
One missed bath isn’t a problem, but after two, then three, our homecarer realised the lady was not going to change her mind. The solution? Our carer bought a plastic bowl and took it with her on her next visit, and the lady was happy to agree to a wash down with a flannel in the kitchen.
We always respect the wishes of our clients in the Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge areas. If they decide they won’t want to do something, we will endeavor to find a workable compromise so we can continue to deliver the care they need, but in a way that is acceptable to them.
