There are more carers than ever before: 6.5 million people across the UK have some form of unpaid caring responsibilities, and it’s thought that three in five of us will have to act as carers at some stage in our lifetimes. Unfortunately, carers have long been Cinderellas within our society; research carried out by Carers’ Week 2016 found that three in four carers don’t feel their caring role is understood or valued by the community.
The government has recognised that carers need more support than they currently get, so it’s looking to review what is currently available and what should ideally be offered:
“We think that we need a new strategy for carers setting out how we can do more. One which reflects their lives now, the health and financial concerns they have, and gives them the support they need to live well whilst caring for a family member or friend.”
It’s asking for the opinions of those with front-line experience to help them work out what that is.
You can take part in the online survey if you are a carer or if you receive care. Ministers also want to hear from other organisations that support carers, such as businesses, social workers and NHS staff.
Carers all too often don’t get a voice, so make sure yours is heard: let the government know what your life is really like as a carer, and what they could do to make a positive difference for you.
